International Journalists Get Primer on U.S.-Vatican Relations

On September 8, the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See hosted over 30 journalists from around the world for a reception and conversation about the embassy’s unique bilateral relationship with the Vatican.

Political Counselor Peter Martin spoke with 38 visitors from around the world who were in Rome for “The Church Up Close”, a bi-annual seminar for journalists, organized by the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. The seminar is designed to give international journalists an array of tools to enhance the quality of their coverage of today’s Roman Catholic Church, and seminar participants meet with a variety of Vatican officials, media organizations, professors, and members of the diplomatic corps during the course of the week long seminar.

During his talk, Mr. Martin discussed the main areas of collaboration between the U.S. Embassy and the Holy See and also offered some personal stories about his positive experiences working with his Vatican counterparts. Participants asked a variety of insightful questions, including questions on the current refugee crisis and the global threat of terrorism.
