Ambassador Hackett on the Tragic Death of Dutch priest Rev. Frans van der Lugt in Syria

“I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Father van der Lugt’s killing in Homs. He was a man of service and was dedicated to calling for a peaceful solution to the violence in Syria, his adopted homeland. Van der Lugt, like many other Catholic priests and nuns around the world, was on the frontline in an area of conflict, trying to ameliorate the conditions of those who are suffering.

The presence of Church leaders in these areas gives hope to many who struggle to survive, and the Embassy expresses its closeness with them at this time and its appreciation for the work they do.”
