In 1947 the United States Marine Corps started the time-honored “Toys for Tots” program, collecting and delivering toys to less fortunate children over the holiday season. In keeping with this tradition, Ambassador Callista Gingrich joined members of the Tri-Mission Italy U.S. Marine Detachment and the United Service Organizations (USO) to deliver toys to children at the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome. Bambino Gesù, run by the Holy See since 1924, is also known as “the Pope’s hospital.” It’s Europe’s largest private pediatric health center.
